Anna Carpenter on Improving Your Racing

Thursday 21st November and Thursday 5th December at 19:30

Anna has very kindly offered to present exclusively to Elton members and guests two Thursday evening talks entitled ‘Improve Your Racing’. There is little doubt that we could all benefit from such an insight from someone who has gone on to great things in international sailing at the highest level.

Many members will know Anna who was a member of Elton for the first 20 years of her life, sailing a topper and qualifying for Zone Squad development aged 11. She then progressed to a Laser 4.7 aged 13 and subsequently to a Laser Radial, where she trained with the National Youth Squad until heading to Bristol University at 18. During her second year at university she switched to crewing a 470 (women’s double handed Olympic class) and qualified for the British Sailing Team that year. She has been fortunate enough to have been funded by the National Lottery ever since then to train and compete full time in a 470 at the highest level.

Sadly, Anna and her partner didn’t manage to secure a spot to represent GB in the 2020 Olympic trials, which took place this year. She has therefore decided to take a break to finally have a much-needed knee operation which she has been putting off for the past four years! She’ll be unable to sail for around five months and I’m sure you’ll join me in wishing her a quick and speedy recovery and return to sailing. On the bright side members have a great opportunity to benefit from Anna’s knowledge and expertise with these two theory sessions and she hopes to see many of you there.

If Anna’s talk back in 2017 is anything to judge by these talks will be inspirational, particularly for young sailors who will see what is possible with a lot of knowledge, hard work and dedication. Don’t miss them!

Improve your racing: Part 1 – Thursday 21st November @ 19:30

Who: This session will be accessible to anyone wanting to improve their technical knowledge of how to make the boat go fast and sailors of any level wanting to improve their starting: ‘You can’t win the race at the start but you can lose it!’

 What:

  • Boat speed theory
  • Starting
  • Pre-start plan

 Improve Your Racing: Part 2 –  Thursday 5th December @ 19:30

Who: The content in this session will be slightly more advanced. It will be useful to have attended the first session but not essential. Some content will be tailored to one-design racing so this will be particularly useful for people who attend class open meetings/regattas, especially juniors aiming for zone/national squads, but the majority will still be relevant to handicap racing at Elton.

What:

  • Strategy
  • Tactics
  • Rules

Bring a notepad – you won’t look nerdy, in fact I’ll be offended if you don’t take notes!
